An open mic experience to take back the power of prom
Proms in theory are considered nostaligic milestones in adolescent experience: however, for those who are neurodivergent, diaspora, and queer, the experience of prom often carries haunting memories of the desire to conform, and fit in: the hope to be “chosen” that often leaves one feeling even more isolated and alone when on the outskirts of a lauded social event. POET PROM works to heal our relationship to the selective nature of prom experiences by making every reader celebrated, chosen and seen. Rather than waiting to be chosen, the mic waits for each prom participant to claim their space. Thus the healing begins.
